Overview
The pump motor is the mechanical driver that determines a pump system’s operational reliability, energy efficiency, and compatibility with site electrical infrastructure. In industrial and mining installations, motor selection is as critical as pump selection — an undersized or incorrectly specified motor results in premature failure, process downtime, and replacement costs that dwarf the original equipment cost.
WSI carries a range of pump motors through its WEG Electric OEM partnership, covering standard industrial frames, hazardous location ratings, and specialty configurations for pump drive applications across mining, oil and gas, military, and commercial facility markets.

Motor Categories Available Through WSI
Standard Industrial Pump Motors: NEMA-frame AC motors for centrifugal pump, booster pump, and general industrial drive applications. Available in single-phase and three-phase configurations across a range of HP ratings.
Hazardous Location Motors: UL-listed motors for Class I, Division 1 and Division 2 environments — required for pump installations in oil and gas facilities, refineries, chemical plants, and mining operations where flammable vapors or combustible dust may be present.
Vector/VFD-Compatible Motors: Variable frequency drive (VFD) compatible motors for pump applications requiring variable speed control — energy management in large water supply systems, pressure-controlled booster applications, and process flow matching.
Definite Purpose Motors: Motors engineered for specific OEM pump applications, including close-coupled configurations and vertical hollow-shaft designs for turbine pump drives.
Three-Phase AC Metric Motors: IEC metric-frame motors for international project specifications — relevant for WSI’s Africa and Middle East project deployments where IEC-standard equipment is specified.

Industrial & Mining Motor Selection Criteria
Voltage and Phase: Confirm site electrical supply before specifying. 460V/3PH is standard for industrial and mining installations in the USA. 230V/1PH covers smaller facility and camp applications. International projects may require 380V/50Hz or other regional standards.
HP Rating: Motor HP must match or exceed pump shaft power requirements at the operating point on the pump curve. Apply a service factor appropriate to the duty — continuous-duty industrial applications typically require 1.15 SF minimum.
Enclosure Type: TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) is the standard for industrial pump motors in outdoor or wet environments. ODP (Open Drip Proof) is acceptable in clean, dry indoor installations only.
Hazardous Area Classification: For oil and gas, mining, and chemical plant installations, verify the motor’s hazardous location rating matches the area classification (Class, Division, Group) at the installation point.
Frame Size: NEMA frame designation determines mounting dimensions. Confirm frame compatibility with the pump’s motor mounting configuration before ordering.
Efficiency Class: NEMA Premium Efficiency (IE3) motors are specified for continuous-duty applications to minimize operating cost over the motor’s service life.
Pump Motor Integration at WSI
WSI’s pump systems are factory-tested before delivery, with motor and pump matched and verified at the operating point. For replacement motors or upgrade specifications, WSI’s technical team can assist with frame matching, HP verification, and hazardous location rating confirmation.
Pump control panels (0–20A, single-phase) are available for motor protection, overload management, and automated start/stop integration.
