Centrifugal Pumps for Industrial Water Transfer and Process Applications

Centrifugal Pumps for Industrial Water Transfer and Process Applications

Overview

Centrifugal pumps are the most widely deployed pump type in industrial, mining, and municipal water infrastructure. They convert rotational kinetic energy — supplied by an electric motor — into fluid velocity and pressure through an impeller rotating within a volute casing. Centrifugal pumps are specified for high-flow, continuous-duty applications where the pumped fluid is relatively clean and low-viscosity: potable water transfer, cooling water circulation, process water supply, pressure boosting, and irrigation.

WSI carries a broad range of centrifugal pumps, including vertical multistage configurations and booster pump assemblies, suited to industrial facility management, mining camp water supply, and government infrastructure projects.

Industrial & Mining Use Cases

Mining Camp Potable Water Distribution: Centrifugal booster pumps maintain distribution pressure in camp water systems fed from storage tanks or treatment systems. Multistage configurations deliver the head required for multi-story or elevated distribution points.

Reverse Osmosis Feed Pumps: RO membrane systems require consistent feed pressure — typically 150–600 PSI depending on membrane type and feedwater TDS. Vertical multistage centrifugal pumps are the standard feed pump configuration for industrial and commercial RO systems. WSI’s WSI Reverse Osmosis Systems are designed around this pump type.

Cooling Water Circulation: Industrial process cooling systems — heat exchangers, cooling towers, quench systems — require continuous high-flow, low-head circulation. Single-stage centrifugal pumps are the standard specification for this service.

Process Water Supply: Manufacturing facilities, food processing plants, and chemical plants use centrifugal pumps for process water supply from storage or treatment systems to point-of-use.

Pressure Boosting for Remote Facilities: Military installations, government facilities, and remote industrial sites with inadequate supply pressure specify booster pump assemblies. The 1.5 HP, 230V, 43 PSI single-stage booster pump available through WSI covers light-duty boosting for small facilities.

Selection Criteria

·       Head vs. Flow Requirements: Plot your system curve and identify the operating point. Multistage pumps are specified when head requirements exceed what a single-stage impeller can deliver efficiently.

·       Motor Configuration: Confirm voltage, phase, and HP against available electrical service. 230V single-phase covers most light industrial and camp applications; 460V three-phase is standard for larger industrial installations.

·       Material of Construction: 304 stainless steel (as in the Tiger CDLF series) is appropriate for potable water and most process water service. Confirm compatibility with any chemical additions in the water.

·       NPSH Requirements: Verify available NPSH at the pump inlet exceeds the pump’s NPSH required (NPSHr) at the operating flow rate to prevent cavitation.

Maintenance Notes

Centrifugal pump maintenance centers on mechanical seal inspection, bearing lubrication, and impeller condition. WSI stocks impeller replacement kits for the Tiger CDLF8-8 multistage series. Pump control panels (0–20A, single-phase) are available for automated start/stop and overload protection.
