Centrifugal Booster Pumps: Specification Guide for Industrial Pressure Systems

Centrifugal booster pumps increase system pressure in water distribution, industrial process, and fire suppression circuits where supply pressure is insufficient to meet demand at the point of use. Unlike submersible sewage pumps, booster pumps are designed for clean or lightly filtered water service and are installed inline — above grade — within a piping system.

Operating Principle

A centrifugal booster pump uses a rotating impeller to impart velocity to the fluid, which is then converted to pressure in the volute casing. Multistage configurations stack multiple impeller stages in series to achieve higher discharge pressures without increasing pump diameter or footprint. Single-stage units are suited for moderate pressure boost (up to ~80 PSI); multistage units (2–10+ stages) are specified for high-pressure applications including reverse osmosis feed, boiler makeup, and high-rise building distribution.

Key Specifications

When selecting a centrifugal booster pump for industrial or commercial service, specify:

·       HP rating: Determines maximum hydraulic power output; sized to system curve intersection with pump curve

·       Voltage and phase: 230V single-phase for light commercial; 230V/460V three-phase for industrial

·       Inlet/outlet size (NPT or flanged): Must match existing piping; reducing bushings are acceptable for short runs only

·       Number of stages: Single-stage for low-to-moderate head; multistage for high-pressure service

·       Max working pressure (PSI): Must exceed system relief valve setting

·       Casing material: Cast iron (standard), 304 SS (potable water and corrosive service), bronze-fitted (marine and brackish water)

Industrial & Mining Applications

Reverse Osmosis Feed Pumps: High-pressure centrifugal or multistage pumps supply feedwater to RO membrane arrays at operating pressures of 150–800 PSI depending on feedwater salinity and membrane type. Vertical multistage stainless steel pumps (e.g., Tiger CDLF series) are the standard specification for RO feed service — 304 SS wetted parts prevent iron contamination that would foul membranes.

Mine Dewatering & Process Water Distribution: Surface-mounted centrifugal pumps transfer water from collection sumps to treatment systems or discharge points. For mine sites with variable inflow, variable frequency drives (VFDs) on the pump motor reduce energy consumption and extend motor/pump life by matching output to demand.

Industrial Pressure Boosting: Manufacturing facilities, oil/gas processing plants, and military installations require reliable pressure maintenance in process water circuits. A 1-1/2 HP, 230V single-phase booster pump at 1-1/2” NPT inlet delivers approximately 43 PSI max pressure — suitable for building pressure maintenance in small commercial facilities.

Irrigation & Agricultural Systems: High-capacity centrifugal pumps supply drip or sprinkler irrigation systems in large-scale agricultural operations, including those in the Middle East and Africa where Water Services Inc operates.

Multistage Vertical Centrifugal Pumps (Tiger CDLF Series)

The Tiger CDLF series (e.g., CDLF8-8) is a vertical, multistage centrifugal pump constructed with 304 stainless steel impellers and casing. Key characteristics:

·       Compact vertical footprint — suitable for skid-mounted packaged systems

·       304 SS wetted parts — compatible with potable water, RO feed, and mildly corrosive process water

·       Modular impeller stack — stages can be added or removed to adjust pressure output

·       Flanged or NPT connections — integrates with standard industrial piping

Replacement impeller kits (CDLF8-8-PE-304SS-IRK) are available for field rebuild, reducing downtime compared to full pump replacement.

Diaphragm & Double Diaphragm Pumps

Air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps are positive-displacement units driven by compressed air, with no electrical connection required. Key specifications for the double diaphragm models stocked at Water Services Inc:

·       Max flow: 285 GPM

·       Max solids passage: 3/8” diameter

·       Drive: Compressed air (no electrical hazard — suitable for classified locations)

·       Self-priming: Yes, to 15+ ft suction lift

AODD pumps are specified for chemical transfer, slurry handling, and applications in explosive atmospheres where electrical equipment is restricted. The 285 GPM capacity covers most industrial transfer and recirculation duties.

Procurement Notes

Specify inlet/outlet size, required flow (GPM), required pressure (PSI), and available power supply when ordering. For RO feed applications, confirm membrane operating pressure and recovery ratio to size the pump correctly.
