Overview
Cast iron submersible sump pumps are the standard specification for industrial sump management, basement dewatering, and facility drainage applications requiring continuous or intermittent operation in harsh environments. Unlike residential-grade thermoplastic units, cast iron construction provides the thermal mass and structural integrity required for high-cycle industrial service — including manufacturing facilities, mining operations, and government infrastructure.
WSI’s submersible sump pump range covers heavy-duty cast iron models in both manual and automatic configurations, with single-phase voltages for facility integration.

Manual models are specified where float switches are controlled externally via pump control panels or building management systems. This allows integration with automated sump management without relying on internal float mechanisms subject to fouling.
Industrial & Mining Use Cases
Industrial Facility Sump Management: Manufacturing plants, warehouses, and process facilities accumulate groundwater intrusion and process drainage in below-grade sumps. Cast iron submersible pumps handle continuous cycling without the thermal degradation that affects thermoplastic units.
Mining Site Dewatering: Open pit and underground mining operations require reliable sump pump capacity to manage groundwater and precipitation ingress. Submersible configurations eliminate priming requirements and operate reliably in confined sump geometries.
Military and Government Facility Drainage: Below-grade mechanical rooms, utility tunnels, and hardened facilities require dependable sump management. WSI’s track record in military applications — with 100% specification compliance in military installations — supports specification confidence.
Construction Site Dewatering: Temporary dewatering during foundation work and underground construction requires portable, submersible pump capacity. Manual operation allows contractor-controlled cycling without float adjustment.
Oil & Gas Facility Drainage: Secondary containment sumps and below-grade equipment areas in oil and gas facilities require pumps rated for the environment. Verify motor and seal compatibility with any hydrocarbon vapor exposure at the installation site.

Selection Criteria
· HP and Flow Rate: Match pump capacity to peak inflow rate with margin. Undersized pumps run continuously and overheat; oversized pumps short-cycle and wear float switches prematurely.
· Voltage: 115V single-phase for standard outlet-powered applications; 230V for dedicated circuit installations with higher HP requirements.
· Discharge Size: 2” and 3” discharge sizes are available. Larger discharge reduces friction losses in long horizontal runs.
· Manual vs. Automatic: Manual models are preferred where external control panels or BMS integration handle level sensing. Automatic (float-equipped) models are appropriate for unattended operation without external controls.
· Construction: Cast iron is specified for industrial service. Confirm seal material compatibility with any chemical content in the sump water.
Control Panel Integration
WSI stocks pump control panels (0–20A, single-phase) for automated sump pump management. Control panels provide overload protection, manual/auto switching, and alarm outputs — standard requirements for industrial sump installations.
