# Title: Wastewater Treatment


## Description: Wastewater treatment typically uses four main stages: Preliminary / Primary Treatment — Physical removal of large solids via screening and grit chambers, followed by sedimentation to settle out heavier organic solids (sludge). Secondary Treatment — Biological processes where beneficial bacteria and microorganisms break down dissolved organic matter in aeration tanks (activated sludge process) or trickling filters. Tertiary / Advanced Treatment (optional but increasingly common) — Further polishing to remove nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), remaining solids, or pathogens using filtration, chemical precipitation, or disinfection (UV or chlorine). Sludge Handling — The collected solids are treated, digested, dewatered, and often repurposed (e.g., as biosolids for fertilizer) or disposed of. The goal is to produce effluent safe enough to discharge into rivers, lakes, or oceans without harming ecosystems.
